eAssessment

eAssessment is the use of IT information for any assessment related activity. Examples are eExamination and the electronic delivery of coursework and online tools to assist in the marking of assessments.

eAssessment technology has the benefit of efficiency, particularly for large classes. It allows students to submit coursework remotely, provides them with the ability to practice assessments prior to eExamination and can offer immediate feedback during certain types of assessment.

As with conventional methods of assessment, students are informed prior to submission or examination on the number and type of questions to be answered, scoring rules, time limitations and grade weighting. eExaminations take place in secure environments where a student’s identity must be confirmed and computers used are locked down to prevent internet access.

All eAssessments are run in accordance with the University assessment framework and, with the Disability Support Office, we accommodate the accessibility requirements of disabled students.

For assessors we offer tools to assist in marking, plagiarism detection and attendance tracking. Our eLearning teams can also provide general advice and assistance in the design of eAssessment.

The majority of eAssessment services are delivered via the Blackboard application, which is accessible via the Teaching and Learning tab of My Manchester.

Other applications include Turnitin (for online submission and plagiarism detection) Grademark (for online marking and feedback).
