Internet and network access

Internet access is available via wired or wireless connection to the University network.

Wireless

There are two wireless networks available on campus. Both networks require a University username and password.

  • eduroam
  • UoM_Wifi

eduroam

eduroam is best suited to mobile devices and visiting staff and students from other educational institutions. Click the link below for more details:

Automatic connection:

Once a connection to eduroam has been setup on a smart phone or tablet the device will automatically connect to the wireless network every time a signal is available. The login details only have to be entered during the initial setup and will be stored and reused automatically.

Visitors:

Staff and student from other institutions can connect to the eduroam wireless internet by using the user username and password from their own institution. Likewise, University of Manchester staff and student will be able to connect to the wireless network on campus at other universities worldwide.

UoM_Wifi

The UoM_Wifi is best used to connect to the internet from a laptop. Click the link below for further information:

Wired internet and network access

The University’s high speed computer network connects all PCs and IT infrastructure to the internet and to each other. It allows all aspects of our IT to communicate with each other and is a fundamental part of providing IT services.

PC and laptops must have the details of the individual machines registered on the University network and would normally be arranged where the user has an office.

Wireless connection requires a valid University of Manchester login. To use the eduroam service, a valid login from a participating educational institution can also be used. The names of participants in the eduroam network are available from its website:

To protect the University wireless service, staff and students must not deploy their own wireless devices on campus. See the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) procedures for further details.

Details on wireless coverage across campus are available in the following link.

For details on connecting to eduroam, please visit the eduroam website:

For details on connecting to the UoM_WiFi network, connect to the network and open a web browser. You will automatically be redirected to the wireless internet login page instead of the usual home page. The standard University login can then be used to access the internet.

To connect to the wired network, please contact the IT Support Centre to arrange the registration of the PC or laptop.
