PC lifecycle management and disposal
PCs provided to staff members and in student clusters are replaced and updated according to varying schedules.
Staff should contact the IT Support Centre when they would like to purchase a new PC.
PCs in student clusters are upgraded by IT when appropriate, but timescales vary depending on the PC cluster.
Hardware re-use
We endeavour to re-use PCs where possible. When a PC has been upgraded, the computer which is replaced is assessed for its potential to be re-used. These PCs can be provided to staff for use within the University at no cost.
Hardware disposal
When PCs and printers are no longer fit for purpose, they are wiped and passed on to an external company for disposal. IT Services will collect PCs, printers and associated equipment.
Restrictions
Unless the PC being upgraded is part of the PC renewal scheme which is run for Professional Support Services (PSS) staff, it is likely that charges will apply for new computers or printers.
Re-use of hardware is handled on a case-by-case basis, but the PC must be used for work purposes and cannot be bought for personal use or donated to external organisations (such as schools) due to incurred liabilities.
Staff should check the details listed for their faculty when intending to purchase a new PC. PSS staff will be contacted when their PC is due for renewal.
