Alma is the University’s Next Generation Library Management System provided by vendor Ex Libris. Alma is a remotely hosted cloud based system with back office access for Library Staff via a web browser. It is the primary system for Library staff performing their day-to-day tasks. It has workflows built in for acquisitions, cataloguing and fulfilment.

The underlying system is a database detailing all physical and electronic resources accessible by customers of the Library. Alma contains a user record for every current staff and student record held by the University of Manchester, as fed by IT Service’s Integration Hub. Alma holds all the rules and permissions governing who can borrow or access which items and for how long.

Library customers do not directly see an Alma interface. They will interact with Alma via Library Search, known internally as Primo. Primo is a cloud based search tool that aggregates indexes from various Library repositories so they may be searched from a single search box. Primo is primarily a search tool, allowing customers to find the resources they require, accessing them directly if electronic or showing where to find physical items within a library. It has ‘My Account’ functionality so customers may view their current loans and fines.

Library management services are available only to Library staff.
