Web content management

The University of Manchester central website and intranets are built using a content management system (CMS). The CMS allows publishing, editing and modifying of web content from a simple web-based interface. The main University CMS is known as Terminal 4 (T4).

Members from individual teams around the University are given access to the CMS to manage their own web content. This allows the task of maintaining the content on thousands of web pages to be disseminated to individual teams. Using the CMS automatically applies the appropriate look and feel of the web template and provides a simple way for staff to add pages and modify text without requiring skills in technical IT programming.

Permissions to modify individual sections of web sites are managed by administrators so staff can be restricted to updating only the content on their team’s website.

Some schools use alternative Content Management systems to T4 but the principle function of all Content Management Systems is the same. Training is provided by IT Services.

Access to Terminal 4 must be approved and is restricted to staff who are responsible for web content.

T4 can be accessed online via the T4 log in page.
